  1. I agree. Words are power. Power that can be used in a good way and in a bad way. I choose good. I appreciate your insights and introspection, as always. And I like the poetic words, “goodly dew.”

  2. How lovely to see the herons as well as the other birds. Fall mornings are special. I hate to think this government is not an aberration but I’m afraid King and Stafford may have a point.

    1. Being Native, I was raised with the expectation that the government could not be trusted. I did not live my parents and grandparents experiences so I often thought they were a bit paranoid. Then I began to understand.

  3. That’s a favourite Stafford poem of mine. Thanks for the reminder.

  4. I like the idea of the crows taking advantage of the off-season 🙂

I will check out Stafford, thanks for the introduction.

    1. They seem pleased. Let me know what you think of Stafford.

  5. Very astute admonition! Way back in Dec 2023 (!) when DiSantis declared speaking the words ‘Woke’ and ‘Period’ (yes that period) in public were to be banned…(I’m shaking my head while writing this rememberance) I would purposely interject those words into any convo I had with hubby while at the Mayo Clinic in FL (not where we live) for his appointments. And whenever we were in public eating out during those times, etc. Additionally, after National Endowment for the Arts Grants got docked shortly after Jan 20th and was told grant applications couldn’t mention certain words, I found an initial listing of words banned that was used for all agency grants (the list has grown since then) on some government site as published by a NYTimes article in March 2025 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/03/07/us/trump-federal-agencies-websites-words-dei.html …over 280 (includes compound words)! Of those: woman, women, underserved, vulnerable populations, tribal, trauma, social justice, diversity, uterus, marginalized, mental health, indigenous community, immigrants, Gulf of Mexico, female, females, disability, disabilities, climate crisis, climate science, at risk…for example.
So YES, speak those words – Use Your Words!

    1. Laura, Of course this is all old news to us and our ancestors but it is both hilarious and terrifying. I had no idea the banned list had gotten so long! I would love to have an enormous foundation so I could give grants only to people using those words. I wonder whether spring, fall, winter, heat, drought, etc will soon be added to the list.

Needless to say, this will not end well.

      1. “but it is both hilarious and terrifying” That’s the hard part…so laughable until it’s not. 😦

  6. I really like that poem. Especially “Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.”

    Gave me the shivers.

  7. I just added one of Stafford’s books to my Amazon cart, Michael. I’m enjoying the Hidden Life of Trees. Isn’t that a book you recommended?

    1. I don’t think I recommended “Hidden life” but I would. Let me know what you think of Stafford.
