Undisciplined?

A clear, cool day following a warmish weekend. There was frost on our windshield yesterday and also on the grass. Here and there we find trees in full color, while others are completely devoid of leaves. Otherwise, there remains a good deal of green. West of here the weekend color was near peak, saturated and brilliant in a classic October rain.

Weekend before last we drove up to northern Vermont on Friday, heavy rain accompanying us for much of the trip. Overnight the wind came up, and by Saturday morning most trees had lost color, many being stripped of much of their foliage. We were told we missed brilliant peak color by a coupe of days.

The past few years peak has been arriving a week of two after the traditional Indigenous Day weekend so we figured there would be good color, at least in the valleys, when we arrived. The fall foliage season has always been somewhat capricious. I imagine it will become even more so.

For whatever reason, right now writing is difficult, as is working with sound. This has been true ever since we started house hunting way back in January. I have focus one day and none the next. Ideas grab my attention, then disappear before I can do anything with them.

For the rest of the year I am working with an international pod of composers on language based composition. I’ve committed to creating something to share by the end of December. I had hoped to have material when we meet again via Zoom at the end of next week, but that seems increasingly unlikely. I miss being able to sit down and knock something presentable out. Getting my Covid vaccine has impacted me to an unusual degree which has not helped.

While it probably does not make any difference what I produce, I deeply want to have it based on writing I have done and that is meaningful to me. I awoke this morning wishing for a sustainable art and writing practice, and remembering my days as a printmaker, a medium that is largely forgiving of my lack of coordination.

I know I would feel better if I had a disciplined practice but, like Foucault, some aspect seems to rebel at discipline.

  1. That grass is beautiful. Yes, it is hard keeping step with Fall. We’ve had some surprises too. I think the whole process of re-locating is very disrupting, even if you manage it all within a shortish time frame. It takes a while to settle into a new location. I’m sure your creativity will kick back in.

  2. “Ideas grab my attention, then disappear before I can do anything with them” — I have times like this too, sometimes for extended periods. It’s frustrating but also reminds me that I’m not in control, that life is cyclical, that seasons of percolation, fleeting glimpses, synthesis that seem to go nowhere are also valuable, whether they lay the ground for a future project or not. For November I am hoping to do something on some project each day but as of now, I don’t know what the project will be yet! I’ve had brief vague ideas but nothing has coalesced. This is when I start to expose myself to as much poetry, art, etc., as I can, feeling for inspiration; or another option is to put everything on silent and listen to what emerges from the silence. I’ll put myself in a room (by myself) each November day and see what comes! Wishing you inspiration as you create.

  3. One of my favourite “Northern Exposure” episodes (among many!) has Chris working on a project of flinging something from a catapult or trebuchet. He has a vision but is struggling to make it real. These are the lines he says just before he flings (a piano) that I carry with me: “Started concentrating so hard on my vision, that I lost sight. Come to find out that it’s not the vision, it’s not the vision at all; its the groping, it’s the groping, it’s the moving forward. … Had to let go of that cow so I could see all the other possibilities. … I think Kierkegaard said it oh so well: “The self is only that which is in the process of becoming. Art – same thing. … The thing I learned: ”It’s not the thing you fling, it’s the fling itself.””

  4. Moving is very disruptive. Perhaps when you have really settled in, your focus will return. Best of luck! For me, art and the creative life are two of the things that make life worthwhile. (There are other things, of course.)
