A cool, bright, high UV morning. Lots of birdsong just outside my window.
The daffs are nearing the end of their season but an abundance of other flowers, both wild and domestic, are coming into bloom. The apple trees that dot our local landscape are lush with white blossoms. It has been consistently very cool, and today, as yesterday, the wind is beyond brisk. It whips the trees, shredding flowers from their branches. In this wind and chill, I see a few butterflies but few bees. I wonder how pollination is going in the orchards.
Down at the beach, the osprey appear to have abandoned their nest, a rare event indeed. We saw them last week but have not seen them since. It has been cold and we wonder whether they have gone elsewhere in search of food. Alternatively, since the last time we saw them Jennie saw three, we wonder whether domestic turmoil contributed to the disappearance of the beach pair.
Oddly, we have seen no osprey except for the pair that are nesting above the bay. None! Given that in a typical year there are some eighty pairs nesting in our immediate environs, to see none this late in the spring is curious. Perhaps most pairs have simply delayed coming north.
It seems fitting that our home, too, is chaotic, with stacks of boxes in every room, seemingly, with everything we need in the moment packed somewhere within them. The piles seem to grow daily. Each day Nori the Cat explores the new additions, then wanders off to bed. She has largely stopped playing, opting for lap time instead. All and all, she seems to be handling the turmoil better than us.
