Oh, Deer! In the yard!

A clear, deep blue sky this frosty morning, by far the coldest dawn thus far in the season. The frost lay thick upon the leaves and grass as we walked into the village to have breakfast with a dear friend. Apparently a lot of other people had the same idea as we found ourselves waiting for a table.

When we got home I sat in the music studio trying to figure out a major sound issue and hoping I had not blown a circuit on one of the synths. I had spent two hours trouble shooting yesterday and found myself thinking about possible explanations for the problem as I was ready to sleep last night.

As I became ever more puzzled I kept looking at the sound cable on the synth in question. It just did not look right. Eventually I tried a new cable and the problem vanished! There are still remain other strange sound issues which I suspect are computer driven as they are intermittent.

Yesterday was rainy and raw. We went out early to run errands and when we returned, in the late morning, a large mixed flock of birds was feasting on berries from our large juniper tree. They may have also been taking a few berries from the adjacent holly. They were so tame they didn’t take flight when we left the car. One particularly handsome mocking bird sat on the garden fence as if making sure we were able to admire him from every angle.

Friday afternoon, following a day of ever so slowly thickening clouds, the world began to darken well before three. The temperature was in the mid-forties, and the air was damp as though snow was immanent.

Just before three Jennie called up to me to look out the window by my desk. I saw nothing unusual so went down stairs where she pointed to two immature deer grazing happily twenty feet or so from our kitchen window. They had probably spent the day bedded down in our yard, as one was photographed by a friend as it stood near the kitchen door early in the morning

The pair were clearly sibs, one a bit larger than the other and probably male. The larger one was paying close attention to their surroundings and lifted its head to look around every time the shutter on my camera released. (I was in the house!) The two ever so slowly edged their way toward the ravine, then into the field where they were joined by mom. They all then made their way out of the field.

Sunset Friday was at 4:21 pm. While we are still a month from the solstice, the earliest sunset will actually occur on December 8th, when the sun will set at 4:15:15, after which evenings will begin to lengthen. Sunrise will continue to come later each day until January 6th. While I enjoy this dark time of year, I also look forward to the returning light.

  1. I’m glad you pointed that out about sunrises and sunsets which I have never realised, assuming the solstice was when days began lengthening on both sides. Age 77 and never noticed! I love the deer pictures. They are very aware of having photos taken, in my experience, even when they are down in the field, they look up as if they know. We have light snow here today and hard frost overnight. Yesterday was quite nice with very moody sky. I’ll post some photos in a day or so.

    1. Oddly, I didn’t know this either. I knew something about it but did not really grasp the differences until I looked at a chart!

  2. Deer must have really good hearing to hear the shutter click when you were inside the house. Those are some wonderful closeups. The weather here is shifting into cold and maybe snow tomorrow. It did not come last week as predicted.

  3. Such lovely photos, Michael!

    1. Thank you, Carol. The young deer have been so cooperative!

  4. Oh, sweet deer. I want to pet them, Michael.

    1. One of the youngsters actually seems almost petable. She seems to really like hanging out in our side yard.

  5. I like the contrast of us caught up in our technological puzzles (though I’m glad you solved yours!) while just within sight birds and deers and the natural world are simply (and profoundly) just doing their thing.

    1. Yes, they are doing their thing for sure. Watching, and sometimes interacting with them, saves my souol.

      1. I feel the same way.
