  1. “Politicians and generals lose wars; everyday soldiers just do their jobs.” Amen! I’m very sorry for your good friend who felt he had to retire and move. I sincerely hope he has found peace in his new chapter of life, and I applaud his work with foster children.

    1. Yes, the situation was nasty. That said, they moved to the country of his family of origin, a land and people they love. They were planning to do that eventually but would have liked it to be under different circumstances. They are much missed by our old community.

  2. Until you’ve been on the front line of armed conflict, it simply isn’t possible to comprehend what soldiers experience but it doesn’t take great imagination to know that apart from anything else it must be terrifying and it is certainly not something a person is ever going to forget. Simply, it changes lives even if there are no physical wounds. The very least out returning servicemen and women should expect is respect and gratitude. I am glad your friend was able to move to a country that embraces him. Our loss, obviously.

    1. Yes, the very least. They should also receive all the aid they need for the rest of their lives. Maybe, if we calculated the true cost of war, we would be very hesitant to have one.

  3. Thank you for this perspective. It’s important to share. I remember my dad, in a letter he wrote home during the Korean War, wishing all those in power, the decision-makers, could walk in his boots on the frontline. I’m paraphrasing, not quoting. But he made an excellent point. I need to dig that letter out and reread it.

    1. I think those words could have been written, as you suggest, by warriors in pretty much every war. The disconnect between the politicians and generals, and the troops, is so often enormous.

  4. Both your posts speak golden truths. Thank you for writing them with such grace and strength.
