Autumn!

Wildlife!

They have been devouring the berries on our eight foot tall Poke Berry plant (which seems unphased by the freeze). At this point there are many fewer than there were twenty-four hours ago.

Here’s an American Robin hiding in the foliage.

And a Blue Jay that is not hiding at all.

  1. I’ve never seen a yellow-bellied sapsucker but we do sometimes see flickers. I love them, but then I love all birds. The only woodpeckers we have at the moment are the really tiny ones. I can’t think what has happened to the bigger ones that could always be heard tapping on a gutter. I did catch sight of a bear down the field recently which is a little concerning because of the proximity to several farms. I hate that so much habitat has been taken from the wild creatures. All are welcome on my property but it is quite small.

    1. The two species are similar and both live here, but flickers are larger. After reading your note I looked at the photos again. The bird is actually a Yellow Shafted Flicker! Thank you!

    1. Thank you, Audrey.
We live in a residential neighbourhood that has pockets of nature built in. The field by our house is actually a very large house lot that will eventually have a house built on it. Still, there is much nature to interact with.
