Remembering Dr. King and the Trails of Tears

This morning dawned a perfect New England winter’s day. We had just enough snow overnight to cover everything in white, then the temperature began falling. It will be a very chilly week.

I woke up in the early morning darkness, thought about the sadness and concern of the day, and decided to go back to sleep.

It is a supreme irony that a lover of Andrew Jackson is sworn into office on Martin Luther King Day. It is also almost exactly two hundred years since that power and resource hungry president began the Trails of Tears.

This moment has been building a long time. Growing up I was often warned about it seemed so unlikely at the time. Do take heart and care.
