Denial

Another clear, bright, dry, record heat day. We are in the cycle in which parched soils hold no moisture, but retain heat. This is a potent brew. Today was windy, greatly enhancing the already high fire risk. Tonight, clouds have come in and the wind has dropped; we expect no rain.

Today has brought a host of opinion pieces about why the Democrats lost the election. Some blame Kamala, others point to the democrats’ refusal to make the complex simple. Still others suggest the Dems had no real forward seeing platform. The number of reasons put forward seems endless.

I was e-mailing with a Native friend earlier today. As we spoke about the election we realized that both of our fathers had told us about the greed and hatred at the heart of our country, warning us that a great darkness might return. We noted that we have watched the decades long rise of the Windigo, the insatiable cannibal giant with a heart of ice. Now, once again, its terrifying form stands before us.

I find myself wondering how it is that so many commentators refuse to acknowledge our country’s history of slavery, genocide, hatred of women and kids, and environmental plunder, What if the problem is not Kamala (who was in my view exemplary), or the Dems incompetence? What if the problem is simply the rise to prominence of the hatred and greed that lie at the center of this country’s history?

Earlier, a really good, bright, acquaintance stood in our kitchen and told us that his lineage stretches unbroken to the Mayflower. He proudly stated that his family had settled this country, coast to coast, even if they had to push some people behind trees out of the way to do so. The painful thing was that he had no clue he was justifying land theft and genocide.

It seems to me that denial, and the need to keep up that denial, shaped this campaign. Now they shape the post election discourse, and threaten to take us to even more dangerous places.

  1. yes, exactly this: “I find myself wondering how it is that so many commentators refuse to acknowledge our country’s history of slavery, genocide, hatred of women and kids, and environmental plunder, What if the problem is not Kamala (who was in my view exemplary), or the Dems incompetence? What if the problem is simply the rise to prominence of the hatred and greed that lie at the center of this country’s history?”

  2. Excellent post. Sigh. I am gutted by the results.

    1. Many of us are gutted. Breakfast this morning with friends brought community as well as fear and determination. A long road I think.

      1. Good to get together with kindred spirits.

  3. It was a very worrying result, even though not my election, it will have repercussions for us all.

    1. Yes, the ramifications are many and great. We will do what we can.

  4. Hi, I discovered your blog through Carol A. Hand (Voices from the Margin). Really appreciate this post… I’ve subscribed and I’m looking forward to your new posts on my WP feed.

      1. Thank you for this note! Somehow I missed it earlier.

  5. Ah…Michael. I am in a place where I have no words…at least no words that should be said aloud!!!

Thank you for your thoughts here.

“The greed and hatred at the heart of our country”…indeed. So painful…

There was a time when I thought it was less so, but then SOMEONE normalized disgusting rhetoric and people came out of the woodwork…and it was soooooo disappointing.

Sending LOVE & LIGHT and pray that there are enough of us doing the same to ward off the darkness.

    1. Oh! Lorrie, somehow I missed your comments. Having grown up, off and on in the South where hatred used to be he norm, I find myself sad, although not surprised at the resurgence of greed and hate. The reality is that all over the country there remain pockets of relative sanity. The darkness always retreats at some point. Still, our combined work remains crucial. Be well!

      1. Hi Michael…I, too, am missing your comments…just found this!!
I agree with you, and realize that we do have a job to do to keep the level of light as high as we can. It is sad, however, that people I have known for many decades have shown who they really are…and that has been particularly difficult to deal with. It’s like someone popped the cork and hatred and vitriol came spewing out. It just gets to me sometimes (alot of times!)
Anyway…so good to see you/hear you! I hope you are well! 🙂

        1. Hi, Lorrie, Popping the cork is a great metaphor! Yes, the hatred and greed were there all along and just needed permission to come out. Sadly, my family always told me this and I always hoped things were truly otherwise. Curiously the trails of tears began almost exactly 100 years ago and were started by a president the current one idolizes. People talk about how awful that time was, yet vote to return there.I hope you are finding a way to nurture yourself today.Be careful and well.

          1. I’ve been up since 4am…and getting a lot of work done…taking care of what needs to be taken care of…and will figure out what that means for me personally.

I went to a sound healing bath yesterday for the first time…I found it an amazing experience…and honestly it was perfect timing!

Sending you peace…and also hope that you know what to do for you!
Thanks, Michael. When things don’t make sense, it throws me off kilter. But I am getting better at accepting what I don’t understand…and still continue to add to the light!!

            Many Sweet Blessings!

            1. I woke in the dark and thought I was not ready to face today so went back to sleep. I imagine we will all be trying to figure things out in the months and years to come. Sometime yesterday I had the comforting thought that although this time is excruciatingly painful, nothing is happening that is not part of Nature. I like to think we can be creative, kind, and even joyous. Otherwise They win.

I have noticed myself backing of from using light and dark as being in opposition. I’m still search for better language….

              1. I understand that. These are, indeed, challenging times ahead. I, too, made it somewhat palatable by keeping my faith so close…and believing that whatever is about to happen surely must be what needs to happen. I don’t profess to know how it will go…or why it is necessary…but it helped to believe that there are no accidents…even when it looks like a HUGE one!

As far ad light and dark…I think you may be right…we need a better classification…if you think of one, please share!!

                Best!

                1. I honestly don’t know whether what happens is what needs to happen, although I do believe that much, if not all, is fated. Yes, keeping one’s faith and friends close seems more important now than ever. It seems many of us are thinking these things this day.

                  1. I get the distinction, Michael. And I wonder if whatever word we come up for for the “Light” could have been stronger to prevent it…
Now I am going to places I don’t really want to go…

Let me, instead, just say that I am here with you, as I also feel your support. And I do believe we will not only survive…but certainly come away with more understanding.

All good things to you…I have enjoyed this conversation. ❤

                    1. Lorrie,
It is good to have fellow travelers on the path. Thank!

  6. Maybe, just maybe, when this all collapses, we may have a chance to make things nicer. Best I can do right now.

    1. Pat, try to remind myself and others that it will collapse and the more those in power imagine themselves safe, the more likely collapse will come. Still, one grieves for all the losses that will come in the meanwhile. I like to think doing our best, as the Buddha and my teachers said, is enough.
