  1. Once again, thank you for writing truth. This is a bit off topic, but I just learned of a 41-year-old man dragged out of the passenger side of a vehicle by masked men at gunpoint in the neighboring town of Northfield. ICE shattered a window to reach the seatbelted man. His teenage son was with him and recorded the entire ICE snatching. Neighbors were also witnesses. The community is rallying around the man’s family. ICE, of course, isn’t explaining much of anything, except to say the man is “an illegal” with a criminal record. I’m sick. It’s one thing to watch this happening in big cities. But to see this in rural Minnesota, in a town 15 miles away, hits me hard. I know the residential street where he was taken. These snatchings without due process and the subsequent incarcerations HAVE TO STOP. Is this really America?

    1. Audrey, I share your horror at the unhinged racism and terror being loosed upon the vulnerable in our country. If it continues unchecked, the target populations will surely grow. As it is, it is a call for anyone with a sense of fairness and empathy, let alone compassion, to stand up and demand the terror end. One wonders why there is so much profound silence.

  2. Although I am not a Christian, I was educated in Catholic schools and I am appalled now by people who call themselves Christian yet do all the things Jesus preached against. How did people become so mean-spirited and narrow-minded? Why must those who are different be enemies? I am sure you re right about people who hoard wealth. In my experience it is the wealthy who are most miserly.
I love the picture of the deer and the robin (it is a robin?) I get sparrows mixed up too. There are so many!

    1. Yes, a robin.
Jesus had a truly radical ministry. It is fascinating to consider how it was cooped by in the name of colonialism. There is a magical Lenny Bruce monologue about Jesus showing up at a contemporary cathedral (“Christ and Moses”. Certainly worth a listen. Christ and Moses

  3. Our political system is disturbing. I do love that verse of Scripture, Michael. Hang in there, my friend.

    1. You, too, Mary.
I think of that piece of scripture often and wonder how often there are sermons that use it….

  4. A an important and timely post, Michael. It reminded me of an article I read recently that helped me remember what we can still do to resist and be human. Here’s a brief excerpt and a link.

“Just as sunlight destroys a vampire, a populace that thinks, questions, and refuses unlawful commands is the surest defense against tyranny. We cannot fight monsters by becoming them. We cannot defeat evil by imitating its methods. If the Vampire State thrives on fear, feeds on hate, is empowered by violence, and demands obedience, then our weapon must be courage, our antidote love, our defense nonviolence, and our answer disciplined, creative civil disobedience.”

    1. Carol, this is so good! Thank you for sharing it! May we remain human. Of course, that has always been the challenge for Natives, right?
