I Fell

A lovely, bird song filled spring morning! The world is green, and everywhere there are flowers.

Five weeks ago I fell on an invisible step as I left the health food store, became airborne, and broke my femur and fractured my hip. After a brief surgery I now have a new hip joint and a repaired femur. Fortunately the femur fracture was right at the hip joint so the repair was not complicated. I was in the hospital for five days and rehab for a week. I must say that although I received excellent care it was great to be home.

I’m receiving PT and OT at home which is a blessing. The team understands polio which is awesome, if more than a little unusual. The surgeon also understands polio and explained to the anesthesiologist what extra precautions he must take on my behalf. The surgery took just a hair over one hour!

I am on hip precautions for at least the next week, which means Jennie has to to put my shoes and socks on me. She also frequently has to retrieve one of the numerous things I drop and can’t pick up with a grabber. It also means that when the soap slips out of my hand while showering, as it often does, it stays on the shower floor….

I am now able to get out for brief excursions (I even went shoe shopping) and to walk for short distances in good weather. Walking is great exercise and relieves the cabin fever, and the distances I can manage are slowly lengthening. I’ve graduated from a rollator to crutches outside which makes walking much easier if a bit more anxiety provoking.

The brain fog and fatigue are improving, although I still tire easily and figure that most days I still have only a hand full of hours when I have the clarity and energy to work on anything, or even read for that matter. Last night I was able to warm up a calzone Jennie had made, and cook some veggies, a major accomplishment!

I have been able to work on music for a couple of hours most days since I got home. Jennie recorded snatches of the chaos in the ER where I resided for 24 hours, being careful not to impinge on anyone’s privacy, and I have been playing with creating something with them. Jennie and I finally managed to organize the studio so we can actually work in it, finding many supplies that have been missing for the four plus years since our move in the process.

All of this is to explain my total absence from the blogosphere for the past few weeks. I’m sure I have missed much that I would have wanted to know, just as I have missed much of the spring.

I hope you are all well and look forward to reconnecting with you.

    1. Thank you! I am grateful as it could have been much worse.

  2. My heart sank when I read the title of your post. Jim and I were remembering, over breakfast, how difficult the past six months have been as he has been healing from the multiple heath problems he faced in December and January. Sending healing energy your way, my friend.

    1. Thank you\, Pat. I’m actually healing faster than my team expected given the post-polio. Still, as you note, it is at times a grind……
I hope you are both feeling much better.

  3. Sorry about the fall but glad you are recuperating. Falling is something all us retired folks think about, but it happens so fast and unexpectedly that there is no planning for it.

    1. Yes, falls are bests avoided if possible. Anyway, healing is underway….
