Late August

A muggy, hot day with a few showers forecast for later.

Since my last post the landscape, in spite of rain, has taken on a late August look. There is suddenly a brown tint to many leaves, even as dark green predominates, and a yellow hue is creeping across the marshes. The farmers’ markets are flush with ripe produce and fruit, and promise much more to come.

Dawn now occurs later and dusk earlier; evening picnics require more planning. Recent days have been unseasonably cool and we’ve had a number of tornados nearby which is quite unusual.

Yesterday the two osprey nests we watch closely each had one chick and one adult. Over the bay young osprey were playing and expressing joy in their flight. They have yet to begin fishing, although their parents were fishing nearby. What a treat to watch the young ones soar!

This morning there were no birds on the nest at the beach.

  1. It is interesting as fall descends upon us, but I also have a tree and a shrub producing blooms like it was spring. Strange weather cycle we are in.
